Which payment type should I use?
Private purchase
When buying from a private seller, Goods and Services is the appropriate payment type. Eligible payments may be covered by PayPal Buyer Protection.
Friends & Family
Only for personal payments, such as gifts or splitting a bill. This payment type does not include Buyer Protection and is not intended for buying goods or services.

Calculate PayPal fees forwards or backwards
Our PayPal Fee Calculator provides three different calculation modes.
Deduct the PayPal fee
Enter the payment amount received by the seller. The calculator displays:
- the original payment amount,
- the estimated PayPal transaction fee,
- the amount remaining after the fee,
- the percentage and fixed fee used.
This calculation is useful when a seller wants to know how much money will actually remain after PayPal deducts its transaction fee.
Add the PayPal fee
If the seller should receive a specific amount after fees, use the “Add fee” mode.
For example, if the seller should receive exactly €100.00, the calculator determines the payment amount required to cover the PayPal transaction fee.
The calculation considers both the percentage fee and the fixed transaction fee. It also accounts for rounding to the nearest cent.
Friends and Family payment
The Friends and Family option is intended only for personal payments. Typical examples include:
- sending a gift,
- splitting a restaurant bill,
- sharing travel expenses,
- transferring money to friends or relatives.
Friends and Family payments are not intended for purchasing goods or services and do not include PayPal Buyer Protection.
Private purchases and PayPal Buyer Protection
When buying an item from a private seller, the appropriate payment type is “Goods and Services” or “Paying for an item or service”.
Eligible Goods and Services payments may be covered by PayPal Buyer Protection. Whether a particular transaction qualifies depends on PayPal’s current Buyer Protection terms and the circumstances of the purchase.
Buyer Protection is not purchased as a separate add-on. The buyer must select the correct payment type when sending the money.
The transaction fee is generally deducted from the recipient or seller. The “Add fee” function calculates how much would need to be sent for the seller to receive the agreed amount after the transaction fee has been deducted.
Do not use Friends and Family for purchases
Friends and Family should not be used to pay for goods or services. These payments are intended for personal transfers and are not covered by PayPal Buyer Protection.
If an unknown seller asks you to pay for an item using Friends and Family, you should be careful. If the item does not arrive or differs significantly from the description, the transaction normally cannot be disputed through PayPal Buyer Protection.
For purchases, select Goods and Services and check whether the item is eligible for protection.
Which PayPal fees are included?
The calculator supports several transaction types and fee scenarios:

How are PayPal fees calculated?
A PayPal transaction fee generally consists of two components:
- a percentage of the payment amount,
- a fixed fee for each transaction.
The basic calculation is:
PayPal fee = Payment amount × Percentage fee + Fixed fee
The remaining amount is calculated as:
Amount received = Payment amount − PayPal fee
For the backwards calculation, the formula determines the payment required for the seller to receive a chosen amount after fees.
Example PayPal fee calculation
If a seller receives a Goods and Services payment of €100.00 and the applicable fee is 2.49% plus €0.35, the estimated calculation is:
- Payment amount: €100.00
- Percentage fee: €2.49
- Fixed fee: €0.35
- Total estimated fee: €2.84
- Amount remaining: €97.16
If the seller needs to receive exactly €100.00, the backwards calculation determines the higher payment amount required to cover the fee.

Who pays the PayPal Goods and Services fee?
The transaction fee is generally deducted from the payment received by the seller or recipient.
Is PayPal Buyer Protection an additional fee?
Buyer Protection is not a separate service that is added to a payment. The buyer must select Goods and Services. Protection only applies to eligible transactions under PayPal’s current terms.
Can the PayPal fee be added to the purchase price?
The calculator can determine the payment required for a specific amount to remain after fees. Whether the fee may be added to an agreed purchase price depends on the agreement between buyer and seller and any applicable legal or contractual requirements.
Can I use Friends and Family for a private purchase?
Friends and Family is intended for personal payments, not for purchasing goods or services. It does not include PayPal Buyer Protection.
Are the calculator results binding?
No. The results are estimates only. The actual fee displayed in the user’s PayPal account and PayPal’s current terms always take precedence.
